Admonishment: Qur’an Verses

اِنَّٓا اَرْسَلْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ بَش۪يرًا وَنَذ۪يرًاۙ وَلَا تُسْـَٔلُ عَنْ اَصْحَابِ الْجَح۪يمِ

Verily, We have sent thee [O Prophet] with the truth, as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner: and thou shalt not be held accountable for those who are destined for the blazing fire.

كَانَ النَّاسُ اُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً فَبَعَثَ اللّٰهُ النَّبِيّ۪نَ مُبَشِّر۪ينَ وَمُنْذِر۪ينَۖ وَاَنْزَلَ مَعَهُمُ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ ف۪يمَا اخْتَلَفُوا ف۪يهِۜ وَمَا اخْتَلَفَ ف۪يهِ اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ اُو۫تُوهُ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَٓاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ بَغْيًا بَيْنَهُمْۚ فَهَدَى اللّٰهُ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا لِمَا اخْتَلَفُوا ف۪يهِ مِنَ الْحَقِّ بِاِذْنِه۪ۜ وَاللّٰهُ يَهْد۪ي مَنْ يَشَٓاءُ اِلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَق۪يمٍ

ALL MANKIND were once one single community; [then they began to differ -] whereupon Allah raised up the prophets as heralds of glad tidings and as warners, and through them bestowed revelation from on high, setting forth the truth, so that it might decide between people with regard to all on which they had come to hold divergent views. Yet none other than the selfsame people who had been granted this [revelation] began, out of mutual jealousy, to disagree about its meaning after all evidence of the truth had come unto them. But Allah guided the believers unto the truth about which, by His leave, they had disagreed: for Allah guides onto a straight way him that wills [to be guided].

رُسُلًا مُبَشِّر۪ينَ وَمُنْذِر۪ينَ لِئَلَّا يَكُونَ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَى اللّٰهِ حُجَّةٌ بَعْدَ الرُّسُلِۜ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ عَز۪يزًا حَك۪يمًا

[We sent all these] apostles as heralds of glad tidings and as warners, so that men might have no excuse before Allah after [the coming of] these apostles: and Allah is indeed al­mighty, wise.

يَٓا اَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ قَدْ جَٓاءَكُمْ رَسُولُنَا يُبَيِّنُ لَكُمْ عَلٰى فَتْرَةٍ مِنَ الرُّسُلِ اَنْ تَقُولُوا مَا جَٓاءَنَا مِنْ بَش۪يرٍ وَلَا نَذ۪يرٍۘ فَقَدْ جَٓاءَكُمْ بَش۪يرٌ وَنَذ۪يرٌۜ وَاللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَد۪يرٌ۟

O followers of the Bible! Now, after a long time during which no apostles have appeared, there has come unto you [this] Our Apostle to make [the truth] clear to you, lest you say, "No bearer of glad tidings has come unto us, nor any warner ": for now there has come unto you a bearer of glad tidings and a warner -since Allah has the power to will anything.

اَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا مَا بِصَاحِبِهِمْ مِنْ جِنَّةٍۜ اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌ

Has it, then, never occurred to them that there is no madness whatever in [this] their fellowman? He is only a plain warner.

قُلْ لَٓا اَمْلِكُ لِنَفْس۪ي نَفْعًا وَلَا ضَرًّا اِلَّا مَا شَٓاءَ اللّٰهُۜ وَلَوْ كُنْتُ اَعْلَمُ الْغَيْبَ لَاسْتَكْثَرْتُ مِنَ الْخَيْرِۚ وَمَا مَسَّنِيَ السُّٓوءُ اِنْ اَنَا۬ اِلَّا نَذ۪يرٌ وَبَش۪يرٌ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ۟

Say [O Prophet]: "It is not within my power to bring benefit to, or avert harm from, myself, except as Allah may please. And if I knew that which is beyond the reach of human perception, abundant good fortune-would surely have fallen to my lot, and no evil would ever have touched me. I am nothing but a warner, and a herald of glad tidings unto people who will believe."

فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكٌ بَعْضَ مَا يُوحٰٓى اِلَيْكَ وَضَٓائِقٌ بِه۪ صَدْرُكَ اَنْ يَقُولُوا لَوْلَٓا اُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ كَنْزٌ اَوْ جَٓاءَ مَعَهُ مَلَكٌۜ اِنَّمَٓا اَنْتَ نَذ۪يرٌۜ وَاللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَك۪يلٌۜ

IS IT, then, conceivable [O Prophet] that thou couldst omit any part of what is being revealed unto thee [because the deniers of the truth dislike it,-and] because thy heart is distressed at their saying, "Why has not a treasure been bestowed upon him from on high?" -or, "[Why has not] an angel come [visibly:: with him?" [They fail to understand that] thou art only a warner, whereas Allah has everything in His care;

وَيَقُولُ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْلَٓا اُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اٰيَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّه۪ۜ اِنَّمَٓا اَنْتَ مُنْذِرٌ وَلِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ هَادٍ۟

However, they who are bent on denying the truth [refuse to believe and] say, "Why has no miraculous sign ever been bestowed on him from on high by his Sustainer?" [But] thou art only a warmer; and [in Allah] all people have a guide.

وَقُلْ اِنّ۪ٓي اَنَا النَّذ۪يرُ الْمُب۪ينُۚ

and say: "Behold, I am indeed the plain warner [promised by Allah]!

وَمَا نُرْسِلُ الْمُرْسَل۪ينَ اِلَّا مُبَشِّر۪ينَ وَمُنْذِر۪ينَۚ وَيُجَادِلُ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا بِالْبَاطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا بِهِ الْحَقَّ وَاتَّخَذُٓوا اٰيَات۪ي وَمَٓا اُنْذِرُوا هُزُوًا

But We send [Our] message-bearers only as heralds of glad tidings and as warners – whereas those who are bent on denying the truth contend [against them] with fallacious arguments, so as to render void the truth thereby, and to make My messages and warnings a target of their mockery.

قُلْ يَٓا اَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اِنَّمَٓا اَنَا۬ لَكُمْ نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌۚ

SAY [O Muhammad]: “O men! I am but a plain warner [sent by Allah] unto you!”

تَبَارَكَ الَّذ۪ي نَزَّلَ الْفُرْقَانَ عَلٰى عَبْدِه۪ لِيَكُونَ لِلْعَالَم۪ينَ نَذ۪يرًاۙ

Hallowed is He who from on high, step by step, has bestowed upon His servant the standard by which to discern the true from the false, so that to all the world it might be a warning:

وَقَالُوا مَا لِ‌هٰذَا الرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ وَيَمْش۪ي فِي الْاَسْوَاقِۜ لَوْلَٓا اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ فَيَكُونَ مَعَهُ نَذ۪يرًاۙ

Yet they say: What sort of apostle is this [man] who eats food [like all other mortals] and goes about in the market places? Why has not an angel [visibly] been sent down unto him, to act as a warner together with him?”

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَبَعَثْنَا ف۪ي كُلِّ قَرْيَةٍ نَذ۪يرًاۘ

Now had We so willed. We could have [con­tinued as before and] raised up a [separate] warner in every single community:

اِنْ اَنَا۬ اِلَّا نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌۜ

I am nothing but a plain warner.”

عَلٰى قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنْذِر۪ينَۙ

upon thy heart, [O Muhammad] so that thou mayest be among those who preach

وَمَٓا اَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ اِلَّا لَهَا مُنْذِرُونَۗۛ

And withal, never have We destroyed any community unless it had been warned

وَاَنْ اَتْلُوَ۬ا الْقُرْاٰنَۚ فَمَنِ اهْتَدٰى فَاِنَّمَا يَهْتَد۪ي لِنَفْسِه۪ۚ وَمَنْ ضَلَّ فَقُلْ اِنَّمَٓا اَنَا۬ مِنَ الْمُنْذِر۪ينَ

and to convey this Qur’an [to the world].” Whoever, therefore, chooses to follow the right path, follows it but for his own good; and if any wills to go astray, say [unto him]: “I am only a warner.

وَمَا كُنْتَ بِجَانِبِ الطُّورِ اِذْ نَادَيْنَا وَلٰكِنْ رَحْمَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَ لِتُنْذِرَ قَوْمًا مَٓا اَتٰيهُمْ مِنْ نَذ۪يرٍ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

And neither wert thou present on the slope of Mount Sinai when We called out [to Moses]: but [thou, too, art sent] as an act of thy Sustainer’s grace, to warn people to whom no warner has come before thee, so that they might bethink themselves [of Us];

وَقَالُوا لَوْلَٓا اُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اٰيَاتٌ مِنْ رَبِّه۪ۜ قُلْ اِنَّمَا الْاٰيَاتُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِۜ وَاِنَّمَٓا اَنَا۬ نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌ

And yet they say, “Why have no miraculous signs ever been bestowed upon him from on high by his Sustainer?” Say: “Miracles are in the power of Allah alone; and as for me – I am but a plain warner.”

اَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرٰيهُۚ بَلْ هُوَ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكَ لِتُنْذِرَ قَوْمًا مَٓا اَتٰيهُمْ مِنْ نَذ۪يرٍ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ

and yet, they [who are bent on denying the truth] assert, “[Muhammad] has invented it!” Nay, but it is the truth from thy Sustainer, enabling thee to warn [this] people to whom no warner has come before thee, so that they might follow the right path.

يَٓا اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ اِنَّٓا اَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذ۪يرًاۙ

[And as for thee,] O Prophet – behold, We have sent thee as a witness [to the truth], and as a herald of glad tidings and a warner,

وَمَٓا اَرْسَلْنَاكَ اِلَّا كَٓافَّةً لِلنَّاسِ بَش۪يرًا وَنَذ۪يرًا وَلٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

NOW [as for thee, O Muhammad,] We have not sent thee otherwise than to mankind at large, to be a herald of glad tidings and a warner; but most people do not understand [this],

وَمَٓا اَرْسَلْنَا ف۪ي قَرْيَةٍ مِنْ نَذ۪يرٍ اِلَّا قَالَ مُتْرَفُوهَٓاۙ اِنَّا بِمَٓا اُرْسِلْتُمْ بِه۪ كَافِرُونَ

For [thus it is:] whenever We sent a warner to any community, those of its people who had lost themselves entirely in the pursuit of pleasures would declare, “Behold, we deny that there is any truth in [what you claim to be] your message!” –

وَمَٓا اٰتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ كُتُبٍ يَدْرُسُونَهَا وَمَٓا اَرْسَلْنَٓا اِلَيْهِمْ قَبْلَكَ مِنْ نَذ۪يرٍۜ

And yet, [O Muhammad,] never have We vouchsafed them any revelations which they could quote, and neither have We sent unto them any warner before thee.

اِنْ اَنْتَ اِلَّا نَذ۪يرٌ

thou art nothing but a warner.

اِنَّٓا اَرْسَلْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ بَش۪يرًا وَنَذ۪يرًاۜ وَاِنْ مِنْ اُمَّةٍ اِلَّا خَلَا ف۪يهَا نَذ۪يرٌ

Verily, We have sent thee with the truth, as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner: for there never was any community but a warner has [lived and] passed away in its midst.

وَاَقْسَمُوا بِاللّٰهِ جَهْدَ اَيْمَانِهِمْ لَئِنْ جَٓاءَهُمْ نَذ۪يرٌ لَيَكُونُنَّ اَهْدٰى مِنْ اِحْدَى الْاُمَمِۚ فَلَمَّا جَٓاءَهُمْ نَذ۪يرٌ مَا زَادَهُمْ اِلَّا نُفُورًاۙ

As it is, they [who are averse to the truth often] swear by Allah with their most solemn oaths that if a warner should ever come to them, they would follow his guidance better than any of the communities [of old had followed the warner sent to them]: but now that a warner has come unto them, [his call] but increases their aversion,

وَلَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا ف۪يهِمْ مُنْذِر۪ينَ

although, verily, We had sent warners unto them:

وَعَجِبُٓوا اَنْ جَٓاءَهُمْ مُنْذِرٌ مِنْهُمْۘ وَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هٰذَا سَاحِرٌ كَذَّابٌۚ

Now these [people] deem it strange that a warner should have come unto them from their own midst – and [so] the deniers of the truth are saying: “A [mere] spellbinder is he, a liar!

قُلْ اِنَّمَٓا اَنَا۬ مُنْذِرٌۗ وَمَا مِنْ اِلٰهٍ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُۚ

SAY [O Muhammad]: “I am only a warner; and there is no deity whatever save Allah, the One, who holds absolute sway over all that exists,

اِنْ يُوحٰٓى اِلَيَّ اِلَّٓا اَنَّمَٓا اَنَا۬ نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌ

had it not been revealed unto me [by Allah] – to no other end than that I might convey [unto you] a plain warning.

بَش۪يرًا وَنَذ۪يرًاۚ فَاَعْرَضَ اَكْثَرُهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ

to be a herald of glad tidings as well as a warning. And yet, [whenever this divine writ is offered to men,] most of them turn away, so that they cannot hear [its message];

قُلْ مَا كُنْتُ بِدْعًا مِنَ الرُّسُلِ وَمَٓا اَدْر۪ي مَا يُفْعَلُ ب۪ي وَلَا بِكُمْۜ اِنْ اَتَّبِعُ اِلَّا مَا يُوحٰٓى اِلَيَّ وَمَٓا اَنَا۬ اِلَّا نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌ

Say: “I am not the first of [Allah’s] apostles; and [like all of them,] I do not know what will be done with me or with you: for I am nothing but a plain warner.”

وَاذْكُرْ اَخَا عَادٍۜ اِذْ اَنْذَرَ قَوْمَهُ بِالْاَحْقَافِ وَقَدْ خَلَتِ النُّذُرُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِه۪ٓ اَلَّا تَعْبُدُٓوا اِلَّا اللّٰهَۜ اِنّ۪ٓي اَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظ۪يمٍ

AND REMEMBER that brother of [the tribe of] Ad, how – seeing that [other] warnings had already come and gone within his own knowledge as well as in times beyond his ken – he warned his people [who lived] among those sand-dunes: “Worship none but Allah! Verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!”

اِنَّٓا اَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذ۪يرًاۙ

VERILY, [O Muhammad,] We have sent thee as a witness [to the truth], and as a herald of glad tidings and a warner –

بَلْ عَجِبُٓوا اَنْ جَٓاءَهُمْ مُنْذِرٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هٰذَا شَيْءٌ عَج۪يبٌ

But nay – they deem it strange that a warner should have come unto them from their own midst; and so these deniers of the truth are saying, “A strange thing is this!

هٰذَا نَذ۪يرٌ مِنَ النُّذُرِ الْاُو۫لٰى

THIS IS a warning like those warnings of old:

تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِۜ كُلَّمَٓا اُلْقِيَ ف۪يهَا فَوْجٌ سَاَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَٓا اَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذ۪يرٌ

well-nigh bursting with fury; [and] every time a host [of such sinners] is flung into it, its keepers will ask them, "Has no warner ever come to you?"

قَالُوا بَلٰى قَدْ جَٓاءَنَا نَذ۪يرٌ فَكَذَّبْنَا وَقُلْنَا مَا نَزَّلَ اللّٰهُ مِنْ شَيْءٍۚ اِنْ اَنْتُمْ اِلَّا ف۪ي ضَلَالٍ كَب۪يرٍ

They will reply: "Yea, a warner did indeed come unto us, but we gave him the lie and said, 'Never has Allah sent down anything [by way of revelation]! You [self-styled warners] are but lost in a great delusion!"'

قُلْ اِنَّمَا الْعِلْمُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِۖ وَاِنَّمَٓا اَنَا۬ نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌ

Say thou, [O Prophet:] "Knowledge thereof rests with Allah alone; and I am only a plain warner."

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اِنّ۪ي لَكُمْ نَذ۪يرٌ مُب۪ينٌۙ

[And Noah] said: "O my people! I am but a plain warner to you, [sent to tell you]

اِنَّمَٓا اَنْتَ مُنْذِرُ مَنْ يَخْشٰيهَاۜ

Thou art but [sent] to warn those who stand in awe of it.
